How can you, or is it possible to patent business ideas?

Is it possible to patent an idea.. like a business plan sorta thing?
I have ideas for companies that when I tell people I trust they say that’s it’s incredible. What should be my first step in protecting my ideas?

    You can’t patent ideas, you can only patent things. So, if you have an idea about how to set up the next great fast food chain, do it, and if it is successful, expect to be copied (think McDonalds) which you can’t do anything about.

    It is currently legal to patent business models. Think of one-click-shopping. That is a business model.

    Now whether or not the justifications behind the law is BS is another thing entirely…
